500 early child-care sites across Virginia are participating in statewide day of action to encourage Virginians to drink more water
RICHMOND – More than 500 early child-care organizations across Virginia will participate in the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth’s seventh annual statewide Rev Your Bev Day on Thursday, May 9, by promoting drinking water as a healthy beverage choice.
First Lady of Virginia Pamela Northam will kick off the statewide celebration by teaching a preschool class and handing out water to visitors at the Children’s Museum of Richmond – Downtown location. “The earlier we are able to instill the habit of drinking water, the better we are setting up our youth for health and success,” Northam says.
Rev Your Bev Day participants cover 150-plus different zip codes in Virginia and include Head Start programs, Virginia Preschool Initiative participants, family providers and child care centers. Rev Your Bev is a statewide initiative in Virginia to raise awareness about the importance of healthy hydration via classroom lessons and community activities.
The Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth (VFHY) has hosted Rev Your Bev Day since 2013, sponsoring more than 2,500 local events to engage the public with the importance of making healthy beverage choices.
“The Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth is thrilled to be an ally to early childhood educators through our 2019 Rev Your Bev Day. Promoting the health of our children starts with making drinking water a fun experience,” says VFHY Executive Director Marty Kilgore.
Early childhood education stakeholders have partnered together to create age-appropriate educational tools, provide training and tools for child care directors, conduct outreach for Rev Your Bev Day and expand the reach of healthy hydration messages statewide. “Good nutrition, including healthy beverages, is critical to a strong start for young children,” says Virginia Early Childhood Foundation (VECF) President Kathy Glazer. “VECF is delighted to partner with VFHY in bringing Rev Your Bev to hundreds of early care providers across Virginia who support children’s healthy development and school readiness every day.”
The Rev Your Bev campaign has also released new television, radio, social media and online messaging that will be launched throughout the state, as well as a “Flavor Finder” that lets RevYourBev.com website visitors take a short quiz about their food and drink preferences and receive recipes for personalized fruit-infused water combinations tailored to their particular tastes.
