Workshop Description

Many adults share common assumptions or stereotypes about youth. Explore the origination of these assumptions and how they affect relationships with young people. Learn about conscious and unconscious biases you have about youth, the behaviors that result from those biases, and alternative caring behaviors to Adultism. Come meet the challenge!

Key Learning Objectives

  • Identify common assumptions/stereotypes adults hold about youth
  • Explore “Adultist” behavior that affects young people daily
  • Identify caring behaviors to Adultism

Workshop Instructor

Maria Perkins works as the Training Manager for Professional Development with Alternatives Inc. a not-for-profit youth development organization located in Hampton, Virginia whose vision is “developing healthy, principled and creative young people valued as members of the community.”

She is also a national and international trainer with numerous organizations including Academy for Educational Development (AED), National Training Institute (NTI) for Community Youth Work, and BEST Advancing Youth Development (AYD). She additionally partnered in establishing the Regional Delivery System for the Advancing Youth Development training and curriculum in southeastern Virginia.
